Your Home Heating Installation Options
Furnace
In a furnace-based heating system, a furnace generates heat, which is distributed through the system via a duct network. Most furnace units are powered by gas and electricity, so if your home doesn’t have a gas line, furnace installation would also involve installing a gas supply. If you already have AC in your home, a furnace-operated system can use the same network of ducts the air conditioning uses.
Ductless Mini-Split System (Heat Pump)
This heating system uses units called mini-splits or heat pumps, which are like mini-AC units installed in different parts of the home. Each unit has its own thermostat, so you can heat different zones or rooms independently. These systems can provide both heating and cooling, with a refrigerant-based system that adjusts the temperature as needed. This makes them very energy efficient. They are among the least expensive heating systems in terms of running costs.
Hybrid System
Hybrid is comprised of a gas-powered furnace, plus a heat pump. With this system, the heat pump controls the temperature most of the time, and the furnace kicks in when temperatures dip below freezing.
What Is the Best Heating System for Your Home and Family?
Furnace-based central systems tend to be the most popular for family homes. They provide plenty of heat, and since they use the same network of ducts as the air conditioner, they are relatively quick to install if there’s an existing system in place. Hybrid systems are also popular, as they allow for the use of an energy-efficient heat pump, with the option to add more heating with the furnace in colder weather.
Mini-split heat pumps don’t need any kind of duct or pipe network, so they’re overall the least expensive system, with the lowest installation time. They’re often the best choice for small homes or condos, where there may not be enough space to install a heat distribution network. They are also great for adding heat to a space like a garage conversion. In the near future, mini splits or hybrid mini split systems may be the norm for heating and cooling homes.
Home Heating System Installation
Step 1: Site Visit & Job Estimate
When you call us for a new heating installation, we’ll start off by sending an HVAC service professional to your home. They’ll review your current heating system, if you have one, and perform a home inspection. This will help us determine your heating needs. We’ll make some recommendations, and you can choose the system that fits your needs and your budget.
Step 2: Remove the Old System
If you have an old furnace we’ll have to remove that first. To do this, we’ll shut off the electricity and/or gas, disconnect the unit, then remove all the old components.
Step 3: Heating Installation
The installation work the service technician will perform depends on what kind of system you choose for your home. For all systems, it will involve installing one or more indoor heating components They will also inspect any existing gas line and duct work to see if modifications are required.
If you choose a gas furnace installation and your home needs a new line run from the city meter to the house, CW Service Pros’s team can assist and install a gas line. Some systems, such as heat pumps, require installing outdoor components, new wiring, or new copper refrigeration lines. Your service professional will let you know what is required for your installation.
How Long Does It Take to Install a Heating System?
The time it takes to install a new system depends on the kind of system and whether it’s a new installation or a replacement for an existing system. In general, installing a home heating system takes at least one full day. Because of this, it’s best to have the system installed during summer or early fall so that you don’t have to go without heat during cold weather.
Heat pump installation takes four to eight hours, but the job may be longer if it involves installing multiple heating units or any system modifications. The same applies for a mini-split ductless system: The more units that need to be installed and more modifications, the longer the total amount of time needed.
I Already Have a Heating System... How Do I Know When It Needs to Be Replaced?
Your current system is more than 15 years old. The lifespan of a heating system depends on the type it is and its age. Generally, furnaces have a lifespan of around 15 years. The average lifespan of a heat pump is 10 to 15 years.
Your system is using more energy. The older your heating system is, the more likely it is that age is affecting its efficiency, leading to higher energy usage and higher utility bills.
It’s still cold inside, even when the heat is running. As your system ages and parts become worn, it won’t heat as well as it used to. The system might be running constantly, but it’s still unable to maintain a comfortable temperature. Or you may find that there are cold spots that just don’t get warm no matter what.
Repairs are needed more often, and they’re expensive. As your heating system gets older, you may find that it needs repairs more frequently, and that those repair bills are getting higher as the costliest parts start to wear out. If your heating system is more than 10 to 15 years old and the repair estimate is for more than half the cost of a replacement system, then a new system installation is likely to be a more cost-effective solution. Don’t waste your hard-earned money trying to salvage an old, worn-out, inefficient system with a high likelihood of failing in the near future. Put the money towards a new, more efficient system, and breathe easy for a while.
