Buying local is a great way to support your community and improve the prosperity of your area, but it can be hard to tell which produce is local when shopping at your usual grocery store. Fortunately for residents of North Texas, this doesn’t need to be a problem, as the weekly farmers market in Frisco is the place to find fantastic local food at affordable prices.
A Bit of History
Set up by the Frisco Noon Lions Club to encourage the local community to buy farm products grown in Texas, the the Frisco Rotary Farmers Market has been running since 2007. Today, it is managed by Frisco’s Rotary Club and continues to provide valuable marketing opportunities to local producers. The market also strives to preserve the agriculture heritage for which North Texas is known and to remind people of the importance of farmers markets over the years.
When and Where?
From May 6 to October 21, the market will be open every Saturday from 8 AM, so you can go back every week to stock up on your groceries. You can find the market at 4th Street between Main & Elm until 1 PM or until all the produce has sold out. The majority of vendors are happy to accept credit cards as well as cash and checks. Dogs are welcome as long as they remain on leashes.
Fresh Produce
The market has a huge selection of produce, including fresh fruits and vegetables like peaches, melons, asparagus, and tomatoes ripened on the vine – all from local growers. You can also find locally produced honey, fresh bread, and Texas-reared meats. The market often has locally caught salmon available too.
Arts and Crafts
There is more than just food on offer at the market, and it is worth a visit simply to browse the range of handmade goods being sold. Items available include luxury candles, handcrafted soaps, and beautiful quilts. Other vendors stock a range of knitted and crocheted goods, homemade crystal jewelry, and even unique homeware like personalized magnets.
Pamper Yourself
Some of the participating vendors offer services rather than goods. You can even make appointments for treatments such as manicures, chiropractic services, and pet grooming. Local singers and musicians also attend the market, so you can enjoy their performances while you shop. And if all that was not enough, the Frisco Rotary Farmers Market is also a great chance to meet others from your community and get to know the farmers and producers who make the market such a success. If you love the idea of the market and have produce of your own to sell, contact the market organizers via their website to apply to become a vendor yourself!
